Balthasar Burkhard was born 1944 in Bern, Switzerland where he lived and worked until 2010. His photographic projects took him all over the world from the temples of Japan to the rainforests of Brazil, to mega cities across three different continents, to the deserts of Namibia, to the Swiss mountains and waterfalls. The artist pulls his viewers through a range of experiences and perspectives, drawing the eyes from extreme close-ups to panoramic landscapes taken from high above the earth.

Considered a pioneer of large format black and white photo printing, Burkhard’s engagement with the micro and macro is also reflected in the range of silver print sizes, spanning from the small to the huge. It is only in the very last years of his life that he printed in color.

From the personal to the universal Burkhard’s minimal and concrete photography speaks in a language that is difficult to put in words but resonates with a recognizable truth to the viewer.
