Morphology of the world

Like the photographers of the 1920s and 1930s, Balthasar Burkhard was interested in the resonances between the forms of landscapes, people, animals, plants and architecture. He works on a comprehensive morphology of the world: he photographs human bodies, animals, the great cities and metropolises from the air, as well as desert and jungle landscapes, the mountains, clouds and seas, always inspired by works from the history of art and photography.

Animals
The formal concentration on a single phenomenon paves the way for the portraits of a completely different kind: the profile shots of animals in front of a grey canvas. Reminiscent of Renaissance drawings or 19th-century animal photographs, these photographs present the animals as ideal-typical representatives of their species without humanizing them.
