Earwitness Inventory (Photographs), 2019
Related to the installation Earwitness Inventory is Lawrence Abu Hamdan’s first artist book, presenting pictures of the objects that were taken during the first exhibition at Chisenhale Gallery, London. Conceived as a photo box, the work includes 30 cards that take up the artist’s acoustic research and interviews with earwitnesses around the world. Each one features an image on the recto and an accompanying text on the verso ; the whole acts as an archive or a database of the narratives from which the objects are drawn.

Presenting an expanded library of over 90 sourced and custom-designed objects Earwitness Inventory explores the hallucinatory world of the earwitness. This work is informed by Abu Hamdan’s acoustic studies of the Syrian prison of Saydnaya in 2016 and legal cases across the world in which sonic evidence is contested and acoustic memories need to be retrieved. The installation reflects on how the experience and memory of acoustic violence is connected to the production of sound effects.
